Setting Goals that Stick
Setting Goals each New Year is something we all do, and then promptly forget about in the 2nd week of January.
I have found a way to be diligent and faithful to my goals throughout the year that I’d like to share with you.
3 tips to help you achieve your goals for 2019
1. Work backward
I want to write another book in 2019. The average book is 50,000 words or 200 pages. If I write just 300 words per day, then I would have well over 90,000 words by the end of the year. This is more than enough to edit down to an acceptable book length.
All goals can be set this way and help you see the big picture. I also have a goal to contribute content over the rest of my life. If I have 30 years left to live, then my long-term goal at 300 words per day is to write 2.7 Million words! How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!
2. Tell people what your goals are
If I tell others what my goals are, then that peer pressure will keep me from quitting. I like to share my goals with our Upskill Create Community. My goal for 2019 is to write at least 300 words per day (except for Sunday – my day off).
I’ll be using the FREE Version of Evernote to write my content and Evernote is available on all my devices. I will carry my trusty portable Moku Wireless Keyboard with me at all times, which combined with my Smartphone, I should be able to write any time, anywhere!
I also have a goal to write one blog post and produce one podcast and video on Wednesday’s and on Saturday’s. Finally, I will use all of this content generated each month to create one course per month. I call this my 300BPVC Plan for 2019 = Daily (300 words) + Weekly(Blog Post + Podcast + Video) + Monthly(Course).
3. Use a whiteboard to keep track of your goals
I like to check things off of a list. At the end of every day, I like to see what my progress has been. I created a check-off list for one month with daily goals. Once my monthly checklist is complete, I transfer my whiteboard list to a spreadsheet to see the long-term progress. At the end of each month, I create a new list on my whiteboard for the next month.
I also like big whiteboards – 8 foot x 4 foot. Here’s a nicely framed whiteboard for under $200 or if you want a super cheap option, you can go to your home improvement store and just buy some Melamine board to hang up on your wall like this one from Lowe’s for under $30.
When I miss my daily goals, I will not give up. Instead, I will just keep plugging away. This is also known as “Grit”.
This blog post counts as my 300 words for the day and a blog post. Once I record this on video and extract the audio, my video and podcast goals will be complete as well for today. ✅ ✅ ✅ ✅
