The Joy of Learning is the Fuel for your Success.
Derek Sivers, the founder of CD Baby, makes this observation about his own learning journey in his book, “Anything You Want”:
“When you want to learn how to do something for yourself, most people don’t understand. They’ll assume the only reason we do anything is to get it done, and doing it yourself is not the most efficient way.
But that’s forgetting about the joy of learning and doing. Yes, it can take longer. Yes, it may be inefficient… But the whole point of doing anything is because it makes you happy!”
There is a wonderful euphoria that we experience when we struggle to learn something and use it to solve a problem or create something new.
I remember when I first learned how to write software on a Texas Instruments programmable calculator. I typed in the code from a book that came with the calculator and ran the program. Then I learned how to modify the code to do different things. I was hooked! And, that moment in time in high school set me on a path of over 25 years of writing software for a living.
It was a struggle, but each time I learned something new, I stored that new set of coding into my brain and used it over and over as the need arose.
Thankfully today, there are millions of lines of sample code available for solving any problem you might want to solve. So, you can get a jumpstart on your programming project — it’s as close as a Google search directing you to Github, StackOverflow, SourceForge, or Gitlab. There are plenty of programming projects that you can learn about through courses online for free.
What problem would you like to solve today with your new learning?
“When you sign up to run a marathon, you don’t want a taxi to take you to the finish line.” (Derek Sivers, “Anything You Want”)
The Joy of Learning is a great place to start, but it is just the beginning.
