Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta
Badges and Balloons? Where are you going with this? Let me explain…
This was the first time I got to attend the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
It is an annual hot air balloon event where over 500 hot air balloons are displayed and launched in a colorful cornucopia in the sky. Over 800,000 people attend the nine-day event.
We woke up early at 4 am to make it to the launch area for the Mass Ascension at 7 am.
Sadly, today, the winds were too high and kept the balloons from launching. The balloon owners did fill all their balloons so we could at least see the balloons and they were beautiful. So colorful. So creative. Some in traditional balloon shapes and others in the shapes of animals or objects.
And while I was looking at the tethered balloons it dawned on me…
Do something with your badge
When I earn a digital badge and don’t do anything with it, it’s like filling a balloon with air and just leaving it tethered to the ground.
Yes, it’s beautiful. Yes, it’s impressive. But, it is NOT FULFILLING IT’S PURPOSE.
The purpose of Upskill Create is to encourage you to earn badges, but more importantly the purpose if to help you do something with them. Create work product. Write a blog post about what you learned. Create a web application. Just do something, anything with your knowledge!
Because otherwise, your badge will look pretty on your Linkedin Profile, but it will not have served its purpose.
Remember that most employers will not just want to see your badges, but they’ll want you to show them what you have created. “Show me, don’t tell me.”
