Today is Labor Day in the USA. “Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is traditionally observed on the first Monday in September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894.” (Source: https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/labor-day-1)

This past week I helped out a friend of mine for two days at his company called PSIntegration. He had some big orders for his factory that came in. These were short term contract labeling jobs, but required some additional labor to finish. I volunteered and worked on an assembly line. My job was to lift 32 pound boxes each containing 130 dog food cartons onto a pallet. At first, I thought, “This is way below my skill level. I’m an IT professional after all!”
But, then I re-framed it with the following benefits:
- I get to help out my friend
- I get to make some extra money
- I get to listen to audio books while on the assembly line (password to access = freeaudio123)
- I get some free exercise – so far I have lifted 405 boxes weighing 12,960 pounds (and lost 5 pounds!)
- I get to experience comradery with my fellow workers as we work side by side to reach a common goal
I also get to learn the machines that help automate our assembly line – how to debug them, adjust them, replace components, etc. It’s a lot like software development but in the physical realm. Analog Automation might just inspire some ideas for Digital Automation with my software tools (Python, Zapier, IFTTT, ConvertKit, etc.)!
With this new perspective, I look forward to working for my friend during the month of September, learning his business from the ground up, and receiving all of these benefits listed above.
As an IT professional, we spend most of our days typing away on a keyboard, thinking, creating content, writing code, video conferencing, typing, messaging, typing, email, phone calls, typing, more thinking, etc. And although IT careers are well paid and very rewarding intellectually, they also lack in physical exertion. In fact, I’ve read that sitting at work all day can be just as unhealthy as smoking cigarettes.
So, this year, Labor Day means something totally different to me. I’m really appreciating this day of REST! But, I’m also appreciating the benefits of a Good Day’s Work!
To my new co-workers (Ashley, Lashonda, Destiny, Danielle, Keisha, L’Jean, Neeni, and Tiara), “See you on the assembly line tomorrow!”
